Sundance Helicopters of Las Vegas is introducing their new fleet of Airbus helicopters featuring their new Cosmichrome spray on chrome paint scheme.
This helicopter spray chrome project was created by Air Methods and recently exhibited at the HAI Heli-Expo Show in Anaheim, CA. The aircraft features gold tinted Cosmichrome and regular chrome tinted Cosmichrome. Air Methods had tried several other spray chrome coatings before achieving amazing success with Cosmichrome. This is a an advanced spray chrome project that competing systems just couldn’t coat properly. They didn’t have the adequate intra coating adhesion and they just didn’t look good enough.
Eventually all Sundance Helicopters will be coated in Cosmichrome.

One of our customers was commissioned to spray chrome these very large Lady Gaga statues for her Artpop album introduction. The Cosmichrome was tinted to provide the gold and blue finishes. The Cosmichrome spray chrome was applied by Coat of Chrome.Coat of Chrome are experts at coating large objects. The amount of preparation and planning for this project was very challenging and had to be completed with a very tight deadline.This project was the result of a collaboration with sculptor Jeff Koons. Mr. Koons is one of the world’s leading modern artists. His work typically sells for millions of dollars.
These chrome valve covers were spray chromed by our customer Sacramento Chrome and Paint http://sacchromepaint.net using our latest Cosmichrome base coat and top coat. They appear to be disappearing into the table or made of glass because the finish is so perfectly smooth and the color so accurate.
We have been able to significantly accelerate the drying of the top coat so your parts are ready to ship sooner.

Spraying Chrome Instructions. How to Apply Cosmichrome Base Coat
V-BCL Base Coat 100 grams
V-BCL-CAT catalyst 40 grams
Reducer- None needed
Mix for 2 minutes before spraying.
Use a scale to measure the paints. Do not use ratios on mixing cups.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL PARTS MUST BE PREPAIRED PRIOR TO APPLIYING THE COSMICHROME BASE COAT. PARTS MUST BE SEALED AND WET SANDED WITH MIN 800 GRIT SAND PAPER. BCL BASECOAT WILL NOT COVER OR HIDE ROUGH IMPERFECTIONS ON THE SUBSTRATE.
Recommended primers: either urethane, epoxy or polyester. Primer must be catalyzed and must be completly dry before applying base coat. Spray chrome application requires completely dry base coat and primers.
Adjust the spray gun as follows
35-40 PSI at the gun, (2 bars) lower pressures will cause the paint to dry slower so be careful
Wide open fan
Needle open 1 1/2 to 2 turns
Spray the substrate with one medium wet film in a cris cross pattern and let stand for 10 min.
Spray a wet second coat after 10 min have elapsed.
Once you are satisfied with you application allow 30 min to dry naturally before baking or allow to air dry at normal room temperatures and above.
BAKING BASE COAT
It is critical that the base coat is completely and properly dried! When in doubt such as on large or heavy parts or parts with heavy coats of base coat, dry the base coat longer. It is not possible to over dry the Cosmichrome base coat.
If you have applied a primer or other paint on a part first that paint must be completely cured before applying our base coat. If the base coat is wet or a primer beneath the base coat is wet then the final finish can discolor or appear foggy and intra-coating adhesion will be weak. Allow primed parts to bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes at 140 F / 60 C
Longer dry times are fine if your part is large or has a lot of paint. The base coat can’t be over dried!
Higher temperatures can reduce baking time.
Allow parts to cool down to room temp before continuing the process.
NATURAL AIR DRY FOR BASE COAT
Once you have finished applying 2 or 3 coats, let the parts dry in a dust free environment (closed room) for 15– 24 hours minimum at room temp. Small parts dry faster. Large parts take longer to dry properly. When in doubt allow the base coat to dry longer. Our Base coat can’t be over dried so there is nothing to worry about drying parts longer. Even if you bake the part and want to wait until the next day or over the weekend to plate there will still be excellent adhesion. We have accidentally baked parts at 320ºF for 1 hour and the adhesion was still excellent. The base coat discolored and turned brown and it did not damage the coating.
Please note if you have sprayed more then 2 coats of base coat allow more dry time, 24 hours minimum. Minimum!

Spraying Chrome Top Coat Instructions – Cosmichrome. Our top coat is easy to apply. Sprays like normal automotive clear coat. Apply 2 medium wet coats. No champagne bubbles. Never turns yellow.
VU-15 Topcoat is a special blend that has been formulated just for the Cosmichrome application.
VU-15 is an acrylic urethane topcoat that will produce a harder finish as well as excellent adhesion.
Parts can be sanded after application if needed.
VU-15 is Excellent as a final clear coat for outdoor parts, DO NOT apply any other clear topcoats over VU-15 unless the VU-15 has dried for at least 2 days.
Excellent UV capabilities, better then most after-market clear topcoats on the market.
VU-15 has a richer gloss and feel once fully cured.
VU-15 applies wet and is very easy to lay down with no orange peel.
VU-15 TOPCOAT 100 Grams
V390 CATALYST 40 Grams
Mix and wait for 10 minutes before spraying.
Please note that the metalized part MUST be dry and free from any moisture and water, we suggest that you bake at low temperature 95º to 100ºF / 35 C for 45 to minutes before you spray the topcoat. Any moisture and humidity between the metal and the clearcoat can result in very small moisture bubbles in the topcoat.
Adjust the spray gun as follows
PSI 29-35 at the gun handle, (2 bars)
Wide open fan
Needle valve open 1 turn.
(Please note that needle valve setting will vary with the object size)
Spray the metalized piece with one wet film in a criss-cross pattern to achieve an even thickness. Its better to apply less material on the first coat than too much.
Apply the second coat after 10 min have expired, leaving the part with a nice uniform wet shine and even color.
If you desire to spray a third coat you can do so after 10 min between coats.
Once satisfied with your application, allow the topcoat to stand for 30 min before introducing a bake cycle. Do not bake above 105º F. After the part dries a few days higher temperatures are fine.
BAKING VU-15 TOPCOAT
Baking the topcoat will accelerate the total hardness.
Allow top coated parts to baked for at least 1 hour at 100º F 40º C.
Don’t be alarmed if your bake 1 hour is complete and the parts are still soft, this is normal, once cooled down you will have less tackiness if not any at all.
Natural air dry for VU-15 topcoat
Once you have applied the two coats of topcoat allow for air circulation to be present in the environment for 30 min. Let the part stand for 2 to 3 hours to dry for light handling.
Do not use the sun to acelerate drying.
Please note that if you apply more than 3 coats of topcoat, allow more dry time before handling parts shipping or installing.

Cosmichrome tolerates high temperatures.
350ºF is now the upper temperature limit. You can now bake the topcoat at high temperatures. There is no longer the 100ºF/40ºC top coat baking limit. Cosmichrome will not get foggy if over heated about 100ºF when the topcoat is wet. The maximum temperature is 300ºF. Flash off the topcoat for 20 minutes and then bake at higher temperatures for faster and more durable curing. Be careful your part does not melt. Parts that won’t tolerate high heat themselves will still melt.
Improved base coat filling, hiding and leveling.
As easy as our base coat has been to apply, it is even easier now. It hides substrate defects better. Less sanding and prep work is needed. Also it is even more reflective than before. S
Worry free 100% Reliable and Permanent Silver Adhesion to Base Coat.
As many of you already know, Cosmichrome has always had the best silver adhesion in the industry despite some of our competitors’ claims. With this new technology you will achieve perfect silver adhesion every time regardless of how long you dry the base coat. In fact, the only danger is under drying. The silver will adhere to the base coat even if the base coat has cross-linked and hardened. Let it dry a day, a week or even a month. It does not matter. Adhesion is perfect and permanent. Double activation uses our same A22 activator. No need to heat the Activator water unless it is cold.. Mix at room temp and it is ready in only 10 minutes. If the water is cold let it warm up to room temperature for an hour.
100% Reliably and Permanent Topcoat Adhesion to Silver.
Using an adhesion promoting clear coat, the topcoat adhesion is reliable under nearly any humidity conditions in the paint booth. As soon as all the water is blown off the part it is immediately coated with the adhesion promoter. The adhesion promoter is single component and does not contain isocyanates. No mixing. This coating takes about one hour to force dry with moving air. Heat is not necessary but can be used. It is then coated with the normal VU-13.
Excellent Thermal Shock.
Cosmichrome holds together during extreme and rapid temperature changes on substrates that have high coefficients of expansion such as urethane plastics. Go from the car wash to sub freezing temperatures with no problems.
Fast drying topcoat.
Does not turn yellow over time! All competing spray chrome are plagued with yellowing. Cosmichrome patented technology has eliminated this issue.
What this all means is that you will be able to produce a more durable finish that is much less sensitive to variations in the application. You will also be able to coat parts that are exposed to much higher temperatures than with competing products..
You will no longer have to worry about how long you baked the base coat and at what temperature. The dryer the better.
